A1 1.0 slow to react issue

Featured Replies

Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this.

We bought an A1 1.0 automatic TFSI for my wife. The car takes about 2 seconds to react when moving slowly, regardless of how much you press the throttle. This issue is noticeable when entering a busy roundabout. The car is going slowly, and you need to accelerate quickly to enter a free slot, but it takes 1 or 2 seconds to react.

I also noticed that no matter how slowly you drive, it will not engage the first gear and will always stay in 2nd gear. You need to stop the car to see the first gear engage. I use the S mode when driving through roundabouts, which improves the situation a bit, but it is still quite bad.

I read on a different forum that the automatic gear has this issue, but is it really this bad? Is there any potential fix for this?

I would greatly appreciate any help. I am quite upset with the car.

Thanks.

We bought the car six months ago from a dealer. It is a 2016 model. It is not under warranty anymore.@Magnet

@Steve Q Do you know any affordable OBD scanner?

Thanks John, shame it’s now out of warranty.
Not that it help you, but has it always been like this during your ownership, or has the situation deteriorated to what it is now? This would give a clue as to whether anything has now gone wrong.

I think I recall reading that these do suffer from ‘turbo lag’ type rather slow off the mark, but…..

Let’s hope another owner will be along to share their experience.
Kind regards,

Gareth.

@Magnet

Thanks for the answer! It has always been like this. I don't use it much because my wife is the one who uses it.

I think the problem is that it does not change from 2nd to 1st gear. It keeps the 2nd gear even under 1000 rpm, so it takes a while to react. Anyway, I don't know if this is an issue or if it is the way it is.

For instance, you go around 8 km/h and it keeps 2nd gear. It doesn't matter if it goes under 1000 rpm, so you press the throttle and it reacts quite slowly.

Anyway, I find this quite annoying and a bit dangerous under some circumstances.

Hi John,

In case you and your wife still have the Audi A1 1.0 S-Tronic, you may be interested to know that I have had very similar experiences.

My previous car was a 1999 Opel Astra 1.4 petrol torque converter automatic - with generally smooth, predictable gearbox behaviour (I had it for almost 18 years).  It was starting to need more and more work;  I replaced it with a 2015 Audi A1 1.0 S-Tronic in August this year.  While getting used to the car, I began to realise that it was not as smooth or predictable as what I was used to:  hesitation when starting off from a standstill (it may be only a second or two delay, but when expecting the car to move, it seems like a long time) and it tends to be a bit jerky at low speeds.  So one needs patience and skill in order to achieve a smooth drive.

On the open road, the car is great.  However most of my usage is around town.  I have to acknowledge that it has been a learning experience:  while I knew that DSG was different technology to torque converter, I was not expecting such a big change.    I was a bit naïve in expecting it would be a similar experience to the Astra.  Next time I change car, I will be doing more research and a longer test drive!!

If you still have the car, I would be interested to know how you have been getting on since your post above.

Kind regards,
    James
