Hi Steve.

You're welcome. Are you certain it's the ECU? I ask as the instrument cluster is part of the imobiliser system and failing clusters is not unheard of

Steve.

story so far.

car suddenly started and ran for a few seconds at a time.

aa man said immobiliser system down which is in the cluster. I then removed the cluster and found what I thought was a dry joint .resoldered that joint reasembled cluster and disaster struck. No start even for a few seconds and gauges irratic.

I have another car the same year and engine size that I am going to scrap so I M going to attemp to swap ignition. cluster . Ecu and the black box and hope that works.

do you think I’m missing anything.

If it's anything like my 2002 A6 the imobiliser system has 3 components the instrument cluster, injection pump and ECU. Yours could be the same.

To save yourself heartache I'd recommend you send your current cluster off to be repaired. Lok an eBay as there's companies that offer this service.  You'll be looking at around £300+

Aahhhhhh yes how could I have forgotten that dreaded pump Steve.

will ring round today to see if anyone can fix the cluster or get the immobiliser pin transferred in case of total failiure.

makes you wonder how much it would cost to buy vag com to perform that extraction.

Do t get me started. I need to replace the engine in mine but all this complexity has prevented me from doing it so far.
