A6 Avant Ultra TDi wheel size change.

Featured Replies

I bought the above in Feb this year, not my first Audi, with standard 17" alloys. One week later I put on a set of genuine 20" Rotors with correct tyre size ,profile etc. The next day a front spring snapped while parked up. I replaced both springs, since then I've had to replace both front bearings and driveshafts. All inside 2k miles. The car had 90k on it. So? Was this just mileage sensitive wear or have these wheels been the cause? Wheel alignment was done when fitting the bigger wheels. Just unlucky?

I assume the large wheels will have very low profile tyres, an arrangement that is known to produce a much harsher ride than normal, so it's reasonable to believe that is what has knocked out springs and bearings. Not sure about the drive shafts.

Sorry and thanks for the reply, to be honest, I, and most importantly my Mrs, haven't noticed any significant difference in the cars ride quality and comfort.  If any of us had i would have changed the wheels back straight away. I couldn't find any definitive info either way anywhere so I'm drawing to the conclusion that it's just mileage related wear and tear. The ride quality is superb on the the 20's compared to my 16 plate DS 4 on 18's. Go figure that one!🤣🤣🤣

Hello Colin,

Let’s get back to basics and ask:-

What was the tyre size on your original 17 inch wheels?

What is the tyre size on the 20 inch wheels?

Followed the handbook guidelines with tyres and got the alignment done once fitted, offset was as not an issue as they were Audi A6 wheels.

Sorry, the wheels were Original Audi Rotors with the correct offset for the car,no buckles or previous repairs.  Tyre size was 255/35/20 all round,as recommended in the handbook. It may just be mileage wear and tear and bad luck.

Blinking heck Colin, the detail is dribbling through like a dripping tap!

As has been said, low profile (35) tyres will give you, and the car’s suspension, a hard ride/time. Are these 35 profile tyres XL or not?
It’s now for the sake of asking again, but what was the profile on your 17 inch wheels, and were they XL or not?
