Slow warm up, even in 30 degrees ambient

Featured Replies

Hi im new to the group, wondering if anyone can help.

I had an issue with my car, engine was only reaching around 70 degree temp. So had the main thermostat replaced. Now the car does reach 90 and stays there well, but it takes a long time to get there. Maybe 30mins of driving. Obviously isnt normal still. Ive been told to change the 2nd thermostat by some other owners, but when i give my engine code to suppliers, they are telling me i dont have that part in my engine. Anyone resolved the slow warm up issue? Engine CJCD. 2.0 Diesel CVT

thanks alot, look forword to any replies

Hi Magnet. I’ll contact garage and find out which one they put in. Am i right in thinking that if it reaches 90 then its working correctly though?

No i am checking fault codes tonight, as the ob2 scanner was too wide and did not fit, so waiting for extension cable.

So i dont know what thermostat was fitted, but i think it is faulty.
so i started my car and let it idle for 10mins, after 10mins the temp gauge showed 50 still, but the top hose on radiator was quite hot. Am i right in thinking the thermostat is stuck open?

Ive spoken to the garage that replaced the thermostat and all they said was it was a OE part with 2 year warranty. So they have agreed to take the car in and inspect, and replace if necessary.

i used my odb tonight as the extension cable has arrived. I did live data for the coolant temp and went for a drive. I could only manage to get the temperature to a maximum of 78 degrees.
Whilst the gauge was showing and sitting steady on 90. So when i said the car was getting to 90, that was wrong.

Hello Marc,

As Cliff says. That indeed was my motive for asking what brand the new thermostat was.
In quite recent times I regret to say the reliability of new-out-of-box components has become very, very questionable, and not helped by the increasing use of the term OE which might encourage buyer confidence.

Again, the use of once trusted brand names - now owned by licensing companies - adds kudos to products no longer manufactured to anything like the quality of the original brand. Dad/granddad then says ‘that’s a quality brand’ and it aids sales.

So don’t take for granted that once respected brand name components will be serviceable, simply because they are new. Thermostats are a key component, and are sometimes difficult to access, so for me, it’s the exception to the rule, and I spend a bit more on one bought at the main dealer.
Regards,

Gareth.

Hi Gareth

was naive to think a new OE part fitted for last 2 months could still be the issue, but looks like it is. They will probably fitting the same type again. But hoepfully this one will work. Getting done next Thursday, will report back. Thank you for reply and thoughts

Hello Marc,

‘….probably fitting the same type again… ‘

If so, then the risk of the same end result may well remain.

Why not dip into your pocket and get one (and the rubber seal) from Audi, and ask your garage to fit that.  If you do suffer any issues after that, you can then eliminate the thermostat as the culprit.
Regards,

Gareth.

If i do take my own part in, i’ll lose the warranty with the garage. Ive been assured it the same quality as original, not oe equivalent. After diagnostics im pretty sure it is thermostat issue. This is a pic of last driveIMG_4791.thumb.png.6f32c832ceb32f274b8006432ab032e9.png

So they will be fitting another brand this time - not ‘an OE equivalent’ but now the ‘same quality as the original’!
OK, if it were mine, I would ask them to list the make of the latest one on the work sheet.
2 year warranty on this latest one and starting from now?

I questioned the brand and quality. And this was response. Offering a 2 year warranty, surely not a cheap knock off right? The new one should restart the 2 years again.  They have been great to deal with though which makes a change from some garages ive used. And i will do as you suggested for paperwork. Thanks

Somewhat evasive response!

Perhaps I shouldn’t comment on the following, but…

‘..submit …for testing …..rule yes or know’ Um, know for  no.
‘Doesn’t cost you…..as your our customer…’ Um, your for you are.

Anyway….

Why don’t these people simply state ‘ we used Brand x, and we will now be using Brand Y?
Regards,

Gareth.

Please keep us posted on how you get on. TPS are well known so hopefully the replacement works ok.

Got car back today, and can confirm it was the thermostat which was faulty. Was replaced under warranty. With new part, live data was spot on. If you have slow warm up, or coolant not reaching 90 on live data, get the thermostat changed with a genuine one, nothing cheap, save the headache. Thank you Magnet, who got me inspecting it again even though it was new. Glad to have motor back running great

Glad you got sorted 🙂

I’m very pleased it’s sorted too, but I must say it as I see it:-

If the original thermostat was obtained via TPS, then I think it would be far less likely than it was to be faulty. Possible explanation - first one fitted might have been a Brand X aftermarket, and the second one was ex TPS.

Not that it makes any difference, but even going back into the 70s aftermarket thermostats were of variable quality, and probably the first component to suffer from quality issues. Now it’s quite common for new components to be of dubious quality.

Not wishing to engage in trumpet blowing, but I thought  I solved this, rather than Marc!
