Knocking whilst turning and other

Featured Replies

I’ve recently had a knocking on front suspension and a clicking from the offside. So I changed the driveshaft and the lower arms.

since then I’ve acquired a new knocking when I turn from lock to lock. It also happens when I start moving from a stop and whilst turning round a corner. I know it’s a long shot but has anyone had any similar experiences or  is there any common issues that would result in these symtoms?

thank you in advance

It’s possible but I would expect there to be some sort of excess movement in them when turning. I’ve had it on a pit and inspected all the joints and nothing stands out as having excess play. Just really hoping that it’s not steering rack

Hello Tom,

Is the knocking audible when stationary with engine running, and/or on the move?
Noise on which side?

Brand of driveshaft fitted?
Regards,

Gareth.

It is audible when both moving when turning from lock to lock and stationary when moving off and corners

i believe from the o/s however the noise is rather close to the centre. So could be either

i can’t remember what drive shaft make I put in the car

Thanks Tom,

Can we get this absolutely clear:-

Car is stationary - handbrake on - and engine is running. If you turn the wheel from lock to lock without moving the car, do you hear the noise under that condition?

Sorry just read my previous replies and can see the confusion.

I can hear the noise when:

— the car is stationary and turning from lock to lock

- the car is moving of from stationary. it knocks as soon as it starts to move

- when going around some corners. Not all corners though.

it doesn’t happen when going over bumps or from what I can tell, when braking

Tie-rod ends, CV boots, upper arms, ARB links or coil springs. Stick the front tyres over a couple of magazines and get someone to turn full-lock to full-lock. It needs to be under weight and the magazines help stop tearing up rubber when stationary. Also check springs. Not unusual to loose a couple of cm from broken spring, but that would reveal with twang or clunk noise.

What a brilliant tip. Never even thought of something like that.

I’ve not thought about doing that. I’ll have a check tomorrow and let you know.

Now that that is clear, my guess would now be a broken spring end as one of Richard's suggestions, since you have the knock when stationary - minimising the possibility of it being moving suspension links/bushes etc.

Gareth.

I’ll have a gander tomorrow. And let you know what I find.

Found the issue eventually. So either I was an idiot and didn’t tighten up the lower arms enough or it loosened itself whilst driving. Not really sure, nevertheless that was the source of the knocking.

I appreciate everyone’s help and suggestions. thank you.
