Hello everyone,

got myself a 1997 A6 C5/4B two weeks ago, and because I can surely use some advice from time to time I signed up here. I am in my 50's now and actually did an apprenticeship for 3 1/2 years as auto mechanic when I was in my early 20's (in a VAG garage), but later got into IT. So I still know a bit of this and that, and will of course help too if I can. :)

So there it is, pic taken on the day I got it Oh, and yes, I am in Germany.

Mounted some nice 17 inch original Audi rims in the meantime, but there's still quite a bit to do:

  • whole front axle suspension will be redone April 2nd, after 29 years pretty much every rubber bushing is cracked....will be done in a shop.

  • fixing the manual Tiptronic mode, magnets in the shifting gate are missing (!?), new part should arrive tomorrow hopefully.

  • brakes. all discs and pads are extremely worn and will be replaced, will do this myself.

You guys surely have something similar in the UK, in Germany you can get your car assessed by officials once it's 30 years old to see if it qualifies as oldtimer. if it does you pay a fixed fee for taxes instead of based on the engine size, which is actually 20 bucks more expensive than I pay now, but I will save some solid 400 on insurance/year.

Oh, and the car, even in its current state with the creaking suspension, is a lovely ride.....like Jeremy Clarkson said waaaay back in his test drive: it offers a statesmanlike ride. :D
