Hello there, I'm new to this forum! Have had my Audi A3 about 6 months now, would never go back, great cars! I've recently had some trouble though 👎(Just my luck!) the transfer box has broken, there is a hole in it and leaking oil... I've been looking around on eBay etc. For this part, I have found a couple online for around £400-500. I'm not so great with this kind of thing however... lots of questions!! 

Does it have to be one of the exact same car?

is it ok to get a second hand one? 

Also is this a common problem with the A3?

Hi Josh...welcome to the Forum

sorry to hear you've had problems already and a transfer box is quite a major one to start with.

My advice is to try to find the exact one or if a later one does fit and work okay (worth checking with a specialist rebuilder,etc) as it may have improvements on the earlier spec box.

Hello Trevor, thank you for your reply! I have asked a local mechanic this morning, and he said he would recommend sticking to the same one... but I am going to look further into this 👍It's a shame because I've found a s3 transfer box for half the price of the one I need 👎

I'm hoping to get it back on the road soon, as haven't had it that long, I also need to put on my Audi owners stickers that I haven just ordered 😊 Will keep you updated! Thanks again. 

I can understand your Mechanic's apprehension as there may be so many subtle differences that could lead to problems but if you were in no hurry and you can afford to pay him to put it in and take it back out if it doesn't work then it may be the way forward....and to upgrade is always a good thing.
