2012 Audi A6 - 2.0 tdi - No Reverse

Hi all,

so... the story is... I bought a 2012 Audi A6 2.0tdi S line with 56000 miles on it yesterday. Drove the car away from the lot with no issues, and continued to drive the car for the whole day with no issues.

Got home late last night parked up and went to bed.. very happy with my new purchase.

This morning before I had gone back outside, I even contacted a car wrapping company to de chrome the car, after getting this booked in... time to start the day.

I head out to the car this morning.. simply go to the put the car into reverse... and it won’t move, it only revs. The car thinks it’s in reverse... parking sensors come on, reverse light come on at the back, ‘R’ on the dash. But when i put my foot down the car does not move and just revs.

When I put the car into Drive, it moves... it will go forward with no problems, but it will not go backwards.

After I had managed to get the car to a more open space (towing backwards in neutral and then driving forward to the open location) I tried to rev it hard (not advised) to see if it would engage at higher revs... the car jolted back rather agressively and then cut out... when i turned the car back on the Reverse still does not work and I am hesitant to rev it hard again incase I am doing it any damage.

Is this a common fault? Has anyone been in this same situation?

Help me please!!

Thank you in advance

James

Welcome to the forum James, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch :)

Sorry to hear you're having issues with your a6. It looks a lovely car. Probably a long shot but I'm wondering whether or not you've been able to get a diagnostic check carried out to see if or what fault codes have been thrown up?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the welcome :) I haven't done a diagnostic check just yet, we know a couple of guys who will come down with the computers so we can check the fault codes, but as today was sunday the two lads were both busy. Hopefully will be able to get it checked tomorrow.

Nothing is coming up on the dash, I was reading somewhere that they can something send out a warning message on the dash regarding reverse failure. But I am not seeing anything like this. It's so frustrating as I've only had the car for a day and it seems like such a coincidence, but there was no signs on the first day of driving it that anything was wrong with it.

Cheers

It'll be interesting to see what fault codes come up. As you have only had the car one day, it might be worth contact in the seller. I'm assuming you bought it from a dealership?

Cheers

I'll keep the thread updated when I get the fault codes, I've contacted the seller and he is willing to help us resolve the problem, it's one guy with a quite a few cars for sale. He has also said that if it is a big issue with the car he should be liable to send it back to the auction that he originally bought the car from himself and we can get a full refund for the car. But I would rather fix than get rid to be honest. I only drove it for a day and with all of the optional extra's on it and the way it looks and drove (when it was working) I have already fallen in love with it a bit.

I'll chuck the fault codes on here when I have them, but to any one else reading this if you yourself or anyone you know has had a similar issue please let me know.

Thanks Steve

 Cheers

It sounds like the trader is being fair. Let's hope the issue can be resolved quickly :)

UPDATE!

So today we managed to do a diagnostic check on the car, turns out there no fault codes on the car at all. Not one!

The mechanic who came down said it is the Multitronic/Transmission oil. The weird thing is according to the service history the oil was checked at 48000 and the car is only on 56000 but it wasnt done by audi and just by an independant garage.

So we’ll get in touch with Audi and see if they can get it in for a service. So it might be not be a massive job hopefully!

Fingers crossed it's just a service that's required :) whilst it's in at Audi they will do a free vehicle health check and if you ask them, they should be able to tell you what work the a6 has had done at any Audi dealer.

Keep us posted on how you get on :)

Cheers

Well, never too old to learn as they say Nigel. I believed that the majority of manufacturers had now moved away from putting any recommendation for an interval for changing automatic transmission fluid. Seems VAG treat this requirement differently then, and are stipulating a very low mileage change.

Talking with the owner of a local executive hire/ drive business on the weekend. He uses Audis and Mercecdes with annual mileages of c80K. Seems he would be needing to change the Audi transmission oil twice within one year then. Not a cheap job I guess.

For James,

Daft, but I guess you have tried waggling the control knob around the R position.

Kind regards,

Gareth.

Hi all,

I’ve had an update, so... the car was in with Audi for the last couple of days. Audi did a free diagnostic check for us, but recieved the same results that we had after we did a diagnostic check... no faults.

Turns out Audi come back to us and their technicians have said it’s gonna need a full gearbox change... big cost.

So we’re gonna have to give the car back to the guy we bought it from. I suppose the silver lining is the fact that this issue came up the day after we bought it instead of a few weeks/months down the line.

I have heard all over the place that the VAG gearbox in the 2.0 tdi isnt great and that is has loads of common issues.

Does anyone know about what the 3.0l tdi’s are like? Do they have as many issues?

Or is the 3.0L the right one to go for?

Cheers for your replies everyone,

James
