Hi

Have a 61 plate A3 cabriolet with a roof lining issue. The lining at the rear of the roof (possiblly call it above the "parcel shelf") has come away. It does not seem to be clipped and I cannot see how to re-attach it !!. Have any member experienced this and how remedied ?.

Hi Phil, 

On looking at a previous post on here regarding this issue. Audi technicians advise it has to be glued back into place. Appears to be a common issue. 

Your local motorfactors will have the correct adhesive.

Hello Philip,

Personally, I would be taking some specialist advice on the correct (spray-on?) adhesive to minimise the risk of  you don’t end up having any adhesive bleed-through etc. through your headlining, and it has the best chance of remaining re- stuck. 

Perhaps it would be better to delay any work on this until appropriate businesses reopen and you can seek advice. Trimmers would be a good place to start getting advice, but you can always gather more knowledge online meanwhile.

Its come away at the edges where there seems to be plastic edging

How competent and equipped are you with dealing with the safe removal of the plastic edgings Philip? Worth thinking about that while also researching  suitable adhesives.

Very limited space to gain access, roof up or down does not change this, might try and remove the rear seat backrest to gain more space and double sided tape may be the answer. Problem is that I am not sure how long the tape would do its job. Might try contacting Audi to see what they have to say. I do thank you for you interest and advice.

If this were mine, I would be searching out trusted local (classic car) trimmers. I think that is where you will have the best chances of getting meaningful advice.

While double-sided tape may be a short term solution, I find it tends to dry out and lose its adhesion after many months. Not that I have any experience of refitting roof lining, nor can I suggest an alternative glue, but I wouldn't use DS tape.

Thanks Cliff, I have pretty much decided to wait until lockdown is over and then find a car trimmer.

If I remember correctly this is the plastic extrusion that is press-fit into the rear bow below the rear window?

Or possibly the headlining that clips into the window frame surround?

Some images would be great so we can see exactly what the issue is, sounds like an easy fix.

Thanks for your reply

Based upon that I had another look at it this morning and discovered that there is a platic "U" channel which is bonded to the roof. Stripped the lining from the channel, glued the channel back (not a lot of space to hold the channel whilst the adhesive dries), and now giving it until tommorrow to refit the lining into the channel. All in all well pleased.

Hi Phil, I'm having the same problem. I've glued the trim back (what a pig with such little space) but now I'm struggling to clip the fabric back into the channel, particularly at the top where there's too much tension. Did you have any problems at this point?
