OEM reversing camera retrofit

Featured Replies

Recently bought an edition 1. Has anyone fitted this as a diy fit. Particularly interested in hardwire routing through the car to the mmi. Pictures would  be a bonus. Many thanks.

Wanted to save myself £300, hence the request

Most company’s include the coding in the cost of fitting the kit so the £300 starts to look abit better, I fitted a reverse camera to my b9 and have the equipment at my work to code it in but getting the parameters set correctly was a right pain

Thanks for your response. The camera kit I am thinking of buying has already been calibrated with the superimposed grid lines in the reverse view on the screen. I can do the coding and sdf acceptance using obd11 Pro. It is the cable routing and trim removal and refitting that makes me a bit nervous - so easy to break clips and crack trim.

If it’s your first time just buy a plastics trim tool kit as can’t go far wrong with them, check out any trims you are removing on eBay so you can get a idea of what holds them in place. I routed mine down the passenger side removing the trims along the floor and a and pillar.  the main wiring harness will usually be tucked down the side of the inner sill panel behind the carpet so will be plenty of extra room for you loom, on mine it was lower seat cushion that needed removed for access to the canbus junction and wired into the passenger qter panel fuse box but mine is a b9 avant so yours might differ. Tricky part I found was the mmi connection as just a lot of faffing around getting to the connector i needed but in all honesty there’s nothing to be worried about, from memory the A3 tailgate handle you will be replacing with a camera version can be a pain to remove without losing a few lugs so just keep carm with it and it will eventually come out

Not related to A3, but B9 A4. This is a great video.

I’m planning to do this later this year on my A4 Allroad over a weekend. Have genuine camera, access to VCDS and know my way around trim removal after coming from a B8 where the panoramic sunroof was normally in bits.

The other option, and something to consider is to consider buying access to ErWin. If specialised coding still required, and I’m hoping you don’t need it, then main dealer will have access to ODIS software.

From memory, Audi main dealer wanted 8 hours labour to do this job.

Good luck.

Think it took me a couple of hours but that’s what I do for a job, I would pop down the centre roof trim at the back to secure the wiring to the factory loom at the hinge. Il post a picture of the coding that got mine working properly eventually

Thanks for the really helpful replies. I have an audi guide for the 8y mmi connections that identify plugs and which pins to add so hopefully that will work. Coding very useful. Had vcds in the past but did not bother to replace after using the vin allocation on family cars but can do the same with obd11. Good thought to look at panel parts on ebay to see where clips go. Have some spare clips from a previous vw golf  which seem to be the same as audi. Just got to find the time to take the plunge. Just for info audi want £860 to fit and most others are about £600.

I had my camera fitted by Autologics in my A6 Avant. I remember two things the techy said. The cabling was routed through the roof lining, and that the clips holding the trim on would take you fingers off if you were not careful.

Seen a couple of videos of rear hatch trim removal and think your comment about fingers seems realistic. My concern about the roof lining route which most aftermarket fitters seem to use is the possibility of rattles at a later date. Have you noticed any problems Anton?

Not while I had the car. I may well be wrong, but I seem to remember the guy telling me that the cabling was already in the roof as it was part of the loom for the rear of the car. The installation at home only took about 1.5 hours so that well may have been the case. Tony

 To lower the roof cloth enough to install the wiring further enough inwards as not  to interfere with the curtain airbag clearance section of the roof cloth you would still need to remove B pillar trims, Jesus handles and sun visors, personally I would always rather work along the floor trims then roof trims. If you do go down the roof cloth route be very careful when applying pressure as it’s only thin cardboard with a sponge fabric glued onto it and it kinks very easily and can remain visible afterwards

Il post a picture to  help explain what I mean about the airbag part that you shouldn’t have anything in, all wires should go above the Jesus handle fixings and secure to either the bodywork or be above the roof lining about 6inchs inwards like other manufactures do

Thanks for the additional info on roof route from both of you. I was hoping to keep the wiring as near original as possible so the floor route was my aim. Had forgotten the curtain airbag!!

Avoid the roof lining. Having had the roof lining down on my old B8 A4, I know my way around. The interior as Matt mentions is easily marked. You need a special tool for the interior grab handles, assuming you don’t break the clips or they ping off. If you do go down this route, disconnect battery at least 30 mins before attempting. There’s airbags behind A pillar and curtain airbags. The B Pillar trim is straight forward, but it’s things like rubber door seals.

Long time since I started this thread. Thought I would provide an update with coding for anyone searching this thread. I used genuine audi parts for an A3 8y - package number 8Y0.054.634A with wiring harness 8Y0.054.733  which cost £232. It came with instructions for fitting but not coding. I put the wiring through the car following the recommended route although short cut down  the boot side trim rather than take the whole side trim out but the rest was along the floor clipped to the existing wiring. No trim broken or clips. One change I made was to use the earth inside the boot lid rather than inside the car body as this also saved removing some of the trim. Gaining access to the J533 module for connections was difficult and took some time to release and wriggle out from behind the steering column.

Coding using OBD11 professional

Gateway 19 long coding

Sdf unlock

PaCo_video_parksystem change to RVC_compact_smart

Multimedia Adaption:

Search bap:

VPS_0X0B  = activate

VPS_OXB_msg_bus = terminal15

Search function_configuration_unit

RCV_ video_input = Ethernet

Note: If purchasing a new camera as I did from audi you will need to load parameters via e-odis. Any garage with e-odis should be able to do this if you have the audi part numbers. My local independent vag garage charged £50.
