Audi A6 C8 2022, new car, engine warning light

Featured Replies

Morning everyone.

Brand new owner and user here, somewhat worried.

Last Thursday, I picked up my  2022, A6, 40 Tfsi, petrol, saloon, 28k miles from Motorpoint in Glasgow. The car has a full Audi service history, last being serviced by MP June 2025.

This was after 9 years of owning problem free BMW 520d / 520i driving.

After 8 miles an amber engine management light came on. (See image below)

It says it could be anything from a faulty, fuel cap, oil cap not sealing the system or a couple of sensors.

To be fair Motorpoint have sent the car to the Audi main dealership at Braehead.

Should I be worried and is this a common fault? Apologies if I haven't found previous discussion on this topic.

To round my day off, MP gave me a brand new A3 Sline curtesy car which was fine. 20 minutes after getting it. The front nearside tyre self destructed on the M8 motorway at 60 mph.  Have I made a huge mistake ??

Additional info

You have 30 days for a full refund on the car. Let's be honest people usually change a car when they feel it's going to start giving them problems.

Let's hope motoring get it fixed for you

Hello Jim and sorry to hear of your issue, but it seems you are now in the hands of those who should be able to resolve this to your satisfaction and at no cost to yourself.

To me, the most important issue here is the state of the remaining tyres - this is a life threatening issue.

Have you carefully inspected the 3 other tyres for damage and even wear?
What brands are they, and what brand did you fit as a replacement for the one that blew?
When you say the car has full service history, were you given a copy of this, and if so, how many services did it have in its first 3 years? Perhaps just 1? Were any other issues recorded on the history print out?

If it were mine, I would be ‘investing’ in a history check on the vehicle. I’ve used VCheck to good avail, and this should give you details of change of owners , insurance claims, whether it’s been through auctions etc. Well worth the £9.99 even at this stage.

Please come back to us with some answers and we will attempt to help you through this.
Regards,

Gareth.

Thanks for the prompt replies and responses.

The Audi A3 is sitting back at Motorpoint with it punctured Nexen tyre waiting to be changed. The AA recovery fitted a space saver wheel, drove it to Motorpoint and replaced the punctured tyre. Images below.

I have to pick it up later today once the tyre is replaced. The car has only done 800 miles.

I am hoping 🙏 a Audi main dealership will be able to get to the bottom of and rectify a engine management light.

The car has had two previous services and a health check after 6 months. There is no obvious evidence of any previous issues.

If anyone can recommend a good Audi garage in my area for any future servicing it would be appreciated.

Thanks Jim,

This confusing!
You state the car to be an A6 with 28k miles, yet your latest post states A3 and 800 miles-? (sorry see later)
A two owner car in 3 years ( making you the 3rd owner)  does not seem ideal.

Most important:- how long has the previous owner owned it? You possibly cannot answer that unless you actually saw the V5. If this turns out to be short, then bear in mind that the car may have been previously rejected. Normally main dealers would retain such stock for retail.
Probable cause of tyre failure would be damage. Condition and brand of remaining tyres - not answered.
Can now see replacement car was an A3 - apologies- odd that a ‘brand new A3’ would have a Nexan tyre, but….
Is the A6 at an Audi dealer?

Have you checked the A6 on VCheck yet? If not, I would be checking it out pronto to see how long the previous owner owned it. If short term - worry!
Please keep us updated.
Regards,

Gareth.

Sorry Gareth if I didn't explain clearly enough.

I have bought the A6.

One previous owner. Log book still to arrive in my name. I looked at the service history, and it seemed genuine. I replaced it in car user manual and put it back in glove box.

The engine light came on after 8 miles, Motorpoint have sent it to the Audi dealership.

The A3 was provided as a curtesy car by Motorpoint. The 3 other tyres are fine as they should be on a 800 mile car.

Thanks Jim,

Apologies - my confusion. Let’s hope the A6 gets sorted to your satisfaction.
Please let us know how things progress.
Regards,

Gareth.

If I may add to Gareth's comments, the A3 tyre damage shows the sidewall to be cut, not the tread. That's usually caused by metal that has fallen off a lorry rather than an inherent defect in the tyre, so I'd say you were just unlucky it happened so soon after getting into the car.

The situation with the A6 is surprising in a car only three years old with only 28000 miles on the clock. As the RAC picture shows, it may be caused by something trivial or something spectacularly expensive. I hope the guarantee on the car covers everything. Don't forget the option to reject the car as Steve mentioned.

Thanks Cliffcoggin.

Having no real experience of Audi dealerships I am hoping they wouldn't do a botch job, and hope they fix the fault properly.

Either way , if they don't I won't be accepting the car as it had only travelled 8 miles from the showroom when the light cames on.

I carried out a Vcheck as Gareth suggested and there were no issues whatsoever. Even if it is an expensive repair Motorpoint will be duty bound to rectify it.

I will keep you posted with the outcome.

Thanks Jim,

We can only wish you good  luck in getting it fixed properly and quickly. Are MP providing you with an alternative car while this work is being carried out?
Once everything has been sorted, if it were mine, I would be ‘investing’ in a proper service at an independent, based on MP’s service was likely to have been an oil and filter change, possibly using most economical products. Ask your chosen independent to renew the air filter as well - highly unlikely to have been changed.

Regards,

Gareth.

Hi

Yes Motorpoint have provided an alternative car while it is being looked into.

The A6 is in Audi at Braehead, Glasgow.

I will have to find a good independent specialist.

Any recommendations are welcome.

Probably nothing to worry about. A6 could be anything, likely a sensor somewhere. Diagnostics will reveal as Audi will scan.

A3 on the other hand ultimately unrelated. Nexen brand is good all round tyre fitted from new, so likely previous occupant hit a pot hole which litter Scotland given it’s a courtesy car and OP was in unfortunate position with blowout.

Folks latest update re the EML on my A6 40 TFSI, 2022.

The below email was sent from Audi to Motorpoint. When contacted by Motorpoint today and after reading the email, I told them, that I don't think Audi have actually done anything significantly to rectify the issue, other than reset the EML. Motorpoint have agreed to keep my car and ensure it has done 50 miles , leaving me with the curtesy car.

Email below

Hi Jim

Please find below the notes from the Audi tech and what they found when the car was in :

Visually confirmed EML active while collecting vehicle.

Static events stored under 0001. Completed available test plans: basic setting of throttle valve carried out during test - result states no defect present. Tested air intake and charge air system for leaks - lambda valves altered during test. Test plan advises leak in air intake or charge air system likely present. Assessed all components of systems for obvious signs of damage or leaks - nothing noted.

Fault may be resolved via throttle valve basic setting as EML no longer active post road-test. If fault re-occurs, additional time required to assess system for potential leaks.

 I hope this helps.

So got my car back this morning.

All seems well with the world.

🤞 Has done at least 100 miles since its visit to the dealership.

  • 2 weeks later...

I remember when placing my A6 Sport Saloon into the dealer for its Warranty service, shortly after drivign out, the Engine Managment light came on.

About turned and took it back, and after  a five minute diagnostic check, turned out the problem was the Oil Filler cap in the engine was not properly closed and engaged !

Unbelievable, such fiddly electronic sensors on these things nowadays

  • 2 months later...

Hi Jim I had a A3 s line courtesy car brand new with only 5000 miles on clock and I had a puncture on tyre also found out from Audi breakdown  van that came out the same car had 2 previous punctures so would say something  wrong with a3  tyre choice ?

Hi Gary

What type of tyre was it? Was it a puncture or blow out on the sidewall?

Jim

Just a puncture I think thanks
