Serial winger (Probably) Changing my Nexen tyres.

Featured Replies

New A3 came with Nexen tyres in November. Is it me, or are they a challenge? Covered 120 miles and they are scary - no grip at a hint of moisture. Apparently Nexen are a `mid priced tyre'. Not what I expected from Audi. Booked in for premium tyres tomorrow, hope this helps!

Like the car, but why not fit decent tyres?

Live atop a steep drive. Not the most gentle with the fast pedal, but even gentle application in damp conditions pulling onto my property spins the front wheels. Perhaps I need to get used to front wheel drive - MB rear wheel drive has no issues. Hopefully softer tyres, to be fitted tomorrow will help.

Seems `Nexen' are a `mid priced' tyre. Not what I expected from a premium car brand. Hopefully my choice of new tyres will sort out what seems to be a nice car. At least I can sell the Nexens on Ebay.

A3 is understated, which appeals to me - chose instead of an MB A Class - too much bling. Hope I made the right decision. Time will tell, but at the moment driving my C class, and avoiding the A3.

Thanks for your input.

There are the causes. Going forwards up a steep drive shifts the weight closer to the rear wheels. Add to that a heavy right foot and a wet surface, and you have the ideal conditions for wheel spin. Try reversing up the drive to see the difference.

Thanks for the advice reversing up a 1 in 4 drive, with a sharp bend, for 100 metres. With respect, not a sensible solution. C class has no problem with the added bonus I can see where I am going.

All season tyres fitted today - what a revelation! Extremely cold over Fyligdales moor today, but the return journey was a pleasure - the difference in grip was a revelation. My chosen tyre dealer refuses to stock Nexen, I completely understand their logic.

If you want the Nexen ditch finders, listed now on ebay, be my guest.

I have exactly the same problem. The car came with Goodyear Eagle F1's which I've had for the last 20 odd years and been happy with.

Although overall the grip is fine the traction from standstill of these cars on damp roads is appalling. We have a Polo which is better.

Hopefully you'll find some improvement but I fear your problem won't be completely eradicated.

It's more an issue with this particular car IMO.

I've driven and owned plenty of front wheel drive cars and none have been like this.

I'm adapting to it though, but it still catches you out occasionally.

Thanks for confirmation I am not making this up. Was beginning to think it was me. Had front wheel drive cars in the past with no problems (Except a Honda Legend 30 years ago with the engine so far back to the bulkhead I could make no progress with full winters - no weight on the front (Driving wheels) when going uphill).

Assume no traction control with the A3? Merc 200, with a lot more hp never spins its wheels, however enthusiastic.

Learning curve, because it is a decent car.

Yes it has traction control, it comes in with quite a thump as it brakes the spinning wheel.

I spoke with a guy who had one as a loan car who also complained about it's eagerness to wheelspin so it suggests it really is a thing.

Agree it's a decent enough car, it just needs you to be as gentle as possible with it when pulling out into traffic.

Dear Diago

Thanks for your response. So not entirely my fault. Felt the judder not realising it was the traction control kicking in. Bit disconcerting with the delay. Need to amend my driving style! 150hp should not be a problem for fwd, but it seems it is.

Looking at the engine specifications it has 250nm torque at 1500 rpm so not an insignificant amount for a 1.5 petrol, maybe a stab from the mild hybrid system too just at the moment you could do without it 🤷🏻

Anyway no such issues in the dry.. enjoy the car I'm sure you'll get used to it.

Thank you!

My A3 came with nexen tires. They have done 10000 miles and they are cracked and worn down on all 4 wheels to 2mm. This is not what I expected from a premium car.

Sorry to hear that. Is it worth putting a claim in to the nexen?

Find it interesting that the majority of tyre tests on mid range tyres exclude nexen? The one I found ADAC said for the price, dry performance was good but had lower ratings for wet.
