I have to agree with Gareth on this. It.might also be worth acquiring the engine number from.the dealer as this will as determine what power the engine has :)

I got mine sorted it turned out to be a faulty egr cooler audi did it for free and gave me a courtesy car for the 3 days they had mine very pleased with the outcome car was like new when I got it back

Glad it's sorted :) a failed egr seems to be a common coincidence with the ea189 recall!

  3. Hi Andy, sorry for the delayed reply. I've never heard of removing the camshaft to replace a head gasket. The purpose of the gasket is to run around the edge of the engine and head.

I wonder if they have removed the cam incorrectly in the process in order to cause the damage.

I've found this YouTube video on an Audi 90 engine which might be useful:

    Hope I've helped :)

    Thanks Steve

Wolverhampton Audi have run the diagnostic and said it requires a new steering rack £2.5 half thousand.  I am taking it somewhere else for a 2nd opinion as I don't trust them one bit. When asked if a steering rack should fail on a four year old car they said "well, you might have driven over something"

Hmm, I fully understand why your suspicious of the garage! If you had of driven over something then I would argue tracking would be out, buckled wheel, broken suspension components, broken under tray etc, etc. I would like to think that you would get some factory (manufacturer) good will as it's a part that shouldn't have gone wrong in my opinion.

That's what we used to get customers when I worked at a Volkswagen service department.

  5. Hi Steve, welcome to the forum :) sorry this hasn't been responded too.

Most cars (within the last 10 years) may need software updates to the ecu for the engine or gearbox as improvements are made to a vehicle during it's production cycle. It is classed by Audi as a recall but is nothing to worry about and is completely free to have done. You'll probably not notice any difference in the way it drives though.

Keep.us posted on how the remap goes :)

    Hi guys

Newbie here.  I had the emissions done some months ago on my 2013 A6, after which not only was I getting regen kicking in more often, but occasionally the 'do not drive, steering defective' red warning light, with stiff steering, this would only last a few seconds tho

The light is on continuously now however, have tried the full lock fix with no luck

Looking at replacing my card this year and am seriously considering another dealer

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

My first advice would be to get a diagnostic check carried out to see what fault codes flag up. What has the dealer said?

Itmight also be worth get a check done on the battery to make sure that it is still effective. It should be as the car is only 5 years old. The normal life of a battery is between 7-10 years. But it's worth checking just in case. I say this because a failing battery can cause electronic niggles, bearing in mind your car will have electronic power steering.

  7. Welcome to the forum Phil, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch :)

    Sorry for the delayed reply.

Good choice of upgrade, as I do love the a7 :) however the a6 c5 is a beautiful car. Not that I'm biased in any way! 😀 Oh and my 2.5 tdi is on 328k on.the original engine and gearbox.

The first good thing is that you've set a good budget to start with, which will offer you a wide variety. It's worth seeking an a7 in S line spec or black edition spec as these versions have nicer interiors and wheels. S line usually is lowered slightly from the entry spec version.

As with any car check the service history and ideally this should be full. If you're looking at a 2012 model check to see if the cambelt and water pump have been changed as these are due at around 5 years I believe. Most likely the cars you'll be looking at will be automatic and just make sure that the gears change smoothly both in auto and in manual. Make sure that the gearbox oil has been changed with accordance with the service intervals.

Also, check to make sure all electronic items work as they can be expensive to fix if they go wrong. Furthermore try and check to see if the vehicle you are looking at has had to have the emission recall (ea189 -emissions scandal). If the vehicle you are looking at has recently had the recall carried out within 4 weeks or so of going on sale then you have to ask why. There have been various cases of failed egr's and dpf's as well as reduced fuel economy etc. All of this is being disputed by Vag. We have a whole section on it here:

One issue other members have found with a7 is to do with tyres. Those a7 fitted with Dunlop tyres have found they have split on the inner sidewall. Dunlop are disputing any issues but we have 3 cases on here already. The cause of this is yet unknown. Here's the thread:

In connection with this, if you are looking at an a7 with Quattro make sure that the system works correctly as it can be sensitive and can break by things such as uneven Tyre wear. So make sure on a quattro car that all tyres are worn evenly. The same make of Tyre should be fitted on the same axle also.

I've also found this review on YouTube which may be useful:

In my personal opinion I'd keep the a6 and run it untill it dies. I say this as yours seems to have no major issues.

    Hope I've helped :)

  8. Definitely not original fit. Could be for additional lighting that may once have been fitted by a previous owner. Or for something more naughty like cheat devises to jam the beam for speed cameras or for a road angle iron something similar.

I'd have a look under the dash or under the bumper to see if there is anything that looks unusual.

Your other option is to contact the previous owner or owners. I think.if you find the a6 was a company owned vehicle at some point then I think this could explain alot.

There's no messages on the dash. Maybe I'm becoming a little paranoid. For instance,  I had a new set of alloys delivered today to my local tyre fitters to have a new set of tyres fitted. Went up after work to get them fitted to the car and as they drove the car out I spotted they were not the alloys I had ordered. 😠 long story short, they won't take them back as they've been fitted to the car. I'm waiting for a call tomorrow to see what is going to happen.

It's one thing after another with this car. I love the car but it's starting to grind me down now. 😞

If there are no error messages on.the dash and in my opinion your a3 may or may not have had the clutch to start system, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry to hear about your wheel issues! I wonder what the the wheel company will do?

And to be fair to the car the wheel side of things wasn't technically a failing of the car, if you see what I mean.

Keep us posted on how you get on.

Hm, over £300 for a full service is a little steep. Anything in there that a home mechanic couldn't tackle? I've no warranty to void anyway.

Is that what Audi quoted you?! Or an independent?

Hypothetically not, except resetting the service light. Unless you have vagcom or similar software. As I say a full service requires an oil change, oil filter, air filter, pollen filter. As I say im sure I'm forgetting something, but your local motor factors or euro carparts or similar will be able to advise you on what exactly you need for a full service :)

    Cheers

  11. That would figure as it's after 2007 when they started applying the feature.

Hmm I'm not sure then, as your a3 is registered as a 2007 model it could be either. As in, the model with the feature or without. What comes on the dash when you start it?

And what does the handbook say?

  12. The 2017 World rallycross championship has finished with team EKS driver, Mattias Ekstrom finishing 3rd in the championship at the wheel of his Audi S1. It has been a challenging season for the team and narrowly missed out on getting second in the championship by one point! The championship number 1 spot had been claimed by Volkswagen by the 10th round.

  13. Welcome to the forum Lisa, you'll find the members on here are a friendly and helpful bunch. Do you know which window washer is causing the leak (front or rear)?

As the pump is working and the tank can hold water, my guess is that one if the pipes has come loose. Usually I have found it's the pipe for the rear washer jet that has popped off from a connector or the pipe has split.

To test my theory, have a look to see which washer jet empties the tank faster. Or alternatively have a look/feel in the boot for water in the spare wheel well area, damp carpets/interior trim or for any sign of staining to the headlining etc.

If it's the front washer jet that's at fault, then again I would suspect the pipe(s) have failed. Open the bonnet and look for any signs of a wet engine. The pipe will run on the edge of the bonnet and will be obscured by the sound deading on the underside of the bonnet.

I hope I've made sense, and please keep us posted on how you get on :)

    Cheers

  14. Hi Alan,

I think.your a3 is perfectly fine. I believe this clutch pedal depressed to start was brought in 2007 so it would all depend when yours was built, not registered. If you see what i mean. I think the only exception to the rule is the s3 which had the clutch depress to start feature in 2006 if not sooner.

    Cheers Steve.

I've contacted my local independent for prices. They advised the same, get them done together at the same time.

I'll have a ring around too.

    Cheers

    Jon

Not a problem Jon. Glad I could help :)

  16. Hi Jon, there are 2 types of service. Minor and major. Minor service will include oil filter and oil change and the major service will include:

Oil and oil filter change, air filter change, pollen filter change. I'm.sure there is something I've forgotten!?

If it were me I'd have the service done early at the time the oil change is due.

In terms of price, it's worth asking your local Audi dealer(s) what offers they have on by ringing around ;) there's always a discount they can do I'm sure!

When I worked at a volkswagen service department the minor service was £169 if memory serves me correctly. I can't remember what price the major service was, sorry.

Abit random but a cambelt and water pump was around £499 with Volkswagen (I think).

    Hope I've helped :)

    Cheers

Just had the ok from the boss so I'll be there. It'll be interesting to see what she's got left as the poor girl gets thrashed!

Some time this year I'll be getting her mapped most likely after a service, terra clean and a diagnostics check to make sure all is order 😀. Then I'll be interested to get her back on the dyno to see what she gains 😜.

    Nice one Rob! :)
