Which of the new Audi A5 models feature MHEV ?

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of buying the new A5 petrol front-wheel drive 204ps model, but I'm not the biggest fan of Hybrid or mild-hybrid cars.

Somewhere I read that the whole new A5 series is mild-hybrid, somewhere else that only the A5 Diesel and S5 are mild-hybrid.

I didn't manage to find a clear answer from the official site.

Does anybody know please?

Thanks for your reply.

I just read the review in carwow and I think they imply that all new A5 models are mild-hybrid.

Don't really know what to believe here.

In the end I'll ask audi, just wondering if someone here already knew.

I have a 2024 A4 204ps petrol and it has mild hybrid so I'd be surprised if they hadn't carried it over to the new car.

If you've had an Audi with mild hybrid in the past then it looks like they've made the energy recovery greater in the newer models. In my 2022 A5 coupe I could feel the car slowing slightly with it when I took my foot off the throttle but that effect is greatly exaggerated in the newer ones.

It's not a bad thing, it's just getting used to it. I generally don't brake unless I have to slow down suddenly or for junctions so it took a while to get used to it kicking in. Especially when it decides instead to put the car into neutral and let it coast.

I imagine that it's closer to how EVs behave with their energy recovery

No probs. As I say I went off what's for sake currently on autotrader. And all the ones with 204ps aren't listed as hybrid. But looking at Derek's comment it looks like I could be wrong as he has first hand experience of the A5.

I just got confirmation from Audi that all A5 models come with mild-hybrid technology.

Unfortunately this is a deal-breaker for me as I was planning to keep this car for over 10 years and the cost to fix a possible problem with that system is usually way too high.

Bought myself one of these, 2.0 (150ps) a few months ago, and I think they're quite nice. It's not a real electric motor like on an hybrid, it's inside the starter motor/alternator and does indeed gives a nice boost. It's at its best during traffic jams.

They've improved on that for 2025+ onwards. It becomes  MHEV plus.

Most of these Audis are not as "hybrid" as other brands, they do not run electric-only and certainly are not plug-in. They are just for coast and quick start-stop.

In which case, to protect the battery, just switch off the start-stop. You can even permanently do that (either via OBD, or via a widget).

I have an S5 Avant and the "Hybrid +" as it is referred to is not intrusive and certainly helps with MPG with me seeing ~35MPG on the drives where the Angel is in my ear. It is regenerative so also works as part of the braking system reducing mechanical wear on disks and pads. WRT battery life and repair - time will tell but the only negative I can find at the moment is the slight loss of boot storage now taken up by the battery.

On my first drive it did catch me out with the car in run mode but no engine I thought it had cut out rather than just ready to pull away on electrons rather than hydrocarbons.

Like all things brand new there will be risk and recalls but I personally think it is worth it.
