Hi Steve...welcome to the Forum I would say it is more than likely a sensor issue or even damaged wiring or connector going to the sensor. One other thing you could try first is to remove the battery negative terminal and leave disconnected for an hour or so, then reconnect and shift the gears slowly but repeatedly backwards and forwards (low to high and back again) whilst stationary with the engine running and handbrake on so the control unit can relearn the gear positions.then take it for a drive to see how it works. Done that one a few cars (other makes) before and it tends to work, but worth a try if nothing else before committing to spending money on parts, etc.

If you're just replacing the internal battery in the Fob then there is a reprogramming procedure you can do yourself but if the secondhand Fob is from another car or a new one that hasn't yet been programmed then you will need to take it to a VAG specialist repairer to programme it into the car.

I would say that by the sound of it, electrical connections is where the problem is. Sometimes, twisting the wiring connector/loom 360 degrees so that there is some biasing on the terminals works or at the very least works long enough to establish a diagnosis. Keep us informed of any developments

I can only imagine he may have unplugged a wire from somewhere close to the alternator to affect the traction control or spiked the electronics when fitting it?

Hi Paul....welcome to the Forum I think an upgrade to an Android system is by far the best for functionality and the cheapest option (compare to upgrading to another Audi system) and should be an easy install if you get the correct wiring harness adapters, etc. Try Halfords as they are keen on prices and tend to stock loads of adapters. Hi Ali...welcome to the Forum The first place I would check out is the coolant reservoir pressure cap....if that is weak (it can be pressure tested) then it can allow coolant to escape as vapour if it doesn't hold the pressure to at least 14-18 psi. http://www.audiownersclub.com/parts-results/A3-S3/Engine-Cooling-/33599 Got to be the cheapest place to start looking at Let us know how you get on with it. Quality! seems almost retro nowadays, but almost the norm back then

most alternators would provide an operating voltage of between 12 to 14 volts which fluctuates depending upon power demands. the only difference I can think you may be presented with is the output current (e.g. 60 amps, 80 amps, etc)

would like to see the before and after if you could take some photos and post them up

I would probably remove if it's easy enough or at least mask up behind it so that the overspray doesn't go everywhere

My thoughts are that if it doesn't cost a huge amount of cash to buy one, then why not. At least you know it's there if you need it.

Wow! Looks amazing scenery in the areas highlighted. I would imagine though it is always only as nice as the weather at the time. When I have done a long run I have always gone south (from Dorset) but have always wondered what it would be like to tour Scotland. The one I used to use was made by Comma but not sure where you can but it from nowadays...could try a Motor Factors first.
