Alternator failure related to mild hybrid system?

No as I don't have the software/reader - I just have a plug in LED next to the year selector. Battery is AGM (OEM battery - third one in 40000 m / 60km.

If you find out more about software updates, post on here.

You could almost walk to Baunatal and ask someone !?

I know there are some updates for current converter (OBD11 says there is an update) but I do not have equipment to proceed with an update. More over my vehicle is not under Audi warranty any more  (have only third party provider car warranty) and on my requests to go with update got only the answer that if no fault codes, there is no any necessity to update. In a few thousand km I should have service inspection from Audi, than I will ask then again. Thanks again for sharing the info.

Further to my above post 3 weeks ago, my A6 has reluctantly now been traded in with Audi and I have a replacement car.  A shame because I really like the A6 (my 3rd) but could not tolerate the inheren

No problem. It is now varying the voltage again like it used to do (not stable at 14.6v). 12.5-13.2 driving, 14-15.2 downhill / braking.

Had my 21 plate Q7 down tools with the same error as many of you have experienced.

Dealing with the garage was as a bit of a pain, nothing was written down and no one wanted to place any blame on the part.

However, I picked the car back up today with a new alternator and battery at zero cost to me from Stratford Audi.

Now to follow up with Audi UK for recovery costs.

Thanks for all the advice on this thread, helped a lot in saving me a significant bill.

Audi Worcester say this mild hybrid belt starter generator / alternator is not covered under the 7yr extended warranty and no good will either! I don’t know how they work out whether they extend good will or not?  Please see attached link below to view fault diagnosis.

does anyone have a list of part numbers that are covered? Or any info why this one isn’t covered.

thanks

I am sorry to say but the Audi technician only has the capability to read off a computer screen and not use his brain.
however he has diagnosed the starter generator as the failure.

you need to look back at old posts in this string and yiu will find the part number and the Audi extended warranty which you can present to them.

Hi Mark

thanks for such a quick response - I zoomed in on his laptop and my part number is 05E903018G 0225 iBSG4U. I have scrolled but I can’t see a list of part numbers previously listed only the Audi USA info. Are you able to navigate to it?

That is not the affected part number. The one off my invoice is A4N1 903 028 B

If you check the earlier posts this is the one with the extended warranty so you may not be covered

Ok Thankyou - not the answer I was hoping for but appreciate you taking the time to confirm

It's only the one for the A6,RS6,A7,Q7,A8 that's known to be faulty and being pursued between VWG and the supplier, and covered (for 7 years from 1st reg). It's different on the A3.

Thanks for confirming. Just gutted that a 4yr old A3 with 39k on the clock has cost me 2.4k for what is essentially an alternator! Ho hum 😊

If your A3 has F(A)SH I would contact Audi customer service and pursue the goodwill route. You have nothing to lose. The mileage and age means it is definitely worth having a go.

Thanks for your response - unfortunately not as I purchased it from Cinch 7 months ago. 🤦‍♂️ lessons to self - either buy an approved Audi (which my last two were) or take out an extended warranty with Audi at the point of purchase!

@Poweller - hi there and sorry to bother you. Is there any possible way you could share any written documentation that confirm Audi have agreed to do this for you? Completely anonymised of course. This would really help me if you can!! Many thanks

Hi Gary

The most authoritative source of information is the Gov website. The link is at the bottom of this post.

Here are the pertinent details that led to the free of charge replacement of the BSG on my 2020 A6 C8 Avant 50 Tdi Quattro.

—————

I sent the details to the Audi dealer. After checking they advised that the job would be covered FOC.

The important thing to remember - and I think some dealers don’t know this - is that some ‘recall’ items do not result in the owner being contacted. They only apply if a car presents with a relevant ‘recall’ fault

————

Just further to this I may be in luck as it looks as though the following Audi Recall may affect my car.

Message to dealer included the following:

Would you mind checking with Audi as it looks as though there is a potential water ingress issue with the Starternator fitted to my age of car. I might be in luck🤞

Best wishes

Alex

Thanks Alex, really useful .Unfortunately I drive a Q7, so it doesnt look like I am covered under this recall notice. Appreciate your help though

Hi Gary

Thanks for your post. My example was just to illustrate the process that worked for me.

You’ll need to check for your own car.

Best of luck

I would love to help, but the garage i got the repair done, never gave me the paperwork despite a few times i asked for it.

When my BSG was replaced FOC by the dealer, I was not given any paperwork either. It is probably a policy protocol.

It seems to me, having reviewed various discussions on this topic, and having been a victims of this myself on the Mild Hybrid A3, that ALL Audi starter generators have issues across the whole Audi range. The quicker Audi acknowledged this the better, in order to serve both its failed customers and ultimately the brands image. There seems to be a complete lack of transparency. I have owned several Audis but after my 2.7k bill on. 4yr old car with 40k I probably won’t buy another Audi again.

I think this applies to any modern car with hybrid of any sort (mild or plug in). I would not buy or run one without having an 'official' used warranty, because things break and the dealers have to fix !

My Volvo V60 Hybrid had a known issue with the air con compressor (a £3k fix) which would stop the battery cooling, which would stop the car because everything was interconnected.

Same with the Audi BSG. I'm sure lots of other brands will have their own expensive failures already, or are going to hit people out of the typical 3 year warranties.

So, update from me, without any battle at all, Audi replaced the alternator under warranty, despite being 6 years old, no cost at all to me. Great service.

Has anyone experienced repeat failure of the BSG?

Ours was initially replaced 04/24 after waiting 5 weeks for parts.

Last week we had the same symptoms en route to local garage to replace brake servo sensor - yellow electrical fault light. Turned all non-essential electrics off straight away and made it to the garage, who diagnosed the fault. Limped it to Audi just before Service closed. The adviser I spoke to said they'd had a lot of A6's with problems, just can't believe it could fail 18 months later!

Hopefully you still have 6-months left on the 24 month warranty from the previous replacement

Should do, it's gone back to the same dealer who reluctantly replaced it last time. Hoping they do it under either the parts warranty, or the car is still (just about) young enough to still be under the 7 years. Wondering if there's been any other instances of repeated failure?

Think we're going to try and give the car back under 'not fit for purpose' at this point. Had the sensor not gone I'd have been driving back from work on national limit roads - last time that happened the police got called as I was blocking the road with no lights 🙃
