Audi A6c8 rear spring lower mounting corrosion

Featured Replies

Hi so my car has just turned 4 years old and it’s been to Audi for its 2nd MOT. It passed but had an advisory for Offside Rear Lower Coil spring mounting corroded but not seriously weakened!
They want £320 to change it ! £18 part which is a rubber mount with a aluminium strengthening plate mounded into it that corrodes! Great idea not .
So has anyone else had any issues yet?

Hi,

I had the same problem on my 2017 a4 allroad last year,

same place, o/s/r lower, I had mine replaced at an independent

v w garage  at just over £100.

p.s. my brother, who has the identical car had his go as well on

the o/s/r/    seems funny it is always the o/s/r. that goes.

Never had a issue with my 2017 A5 and my father in law has that now , does seem very poor for an Audi just turned 4 year old to have issues like this already, cars only done 28k !
I have found a guy with YouTube that found the same problem when changing his spring on a A4 funny enough

Hi its quite a common problem mostly the rubber bit rotting out but if I were you I would take heed of the term not seriously weakened, get under the back clean the alloy bit with a small wire brush and then give it a coat of Waxoyl that will keep the rot at bay for years, did mine when I first got it 2019 and they were still good four years later.

Waxoyl’s  a brilliant idea Stevey 👍 think I’m going to try and change them first then apply the waxoyl

Waxoil won't stop the corrosion. The alloy insert is there to strengthen the rubber suspension seat. It corrodes from the inside. Leave it and you risk the spring breaking. Easier to replace on a 2WD car. On quattro, you can remove lower shock mount. You need a piston jack to extend lower trailing arm down. Worst case scenario, loosen subframe bolt a few turns too. No need to undo the eccentric bolt either.

I didn’t need to do anything apart of removing the lower stock mount bolt and then use a bottle jack and a piece of tube over the bottle jack top to the stock top mount fitting bolt ,

using a pair of springs compresses to compress the spring evenly enough to pull out the rubber mount

I’ve got to thank Spartacus  for his write up . And mine s a Quattro too

Heads up the screwed on my spring compressors were too long so I cut them down.   But I only paid £25 for them

Mark you see the plastic rivets on the lower arm I had a problem removing them so  I ended up replacing them ! £10 for 4  ,

Job  took me about 2.5 to 3 hours

Had this happen on my car at around 3+ years. Mine was the Rear Near Side. Dealer service dept reckoned that Near Side is more vulnerable due to roadside puddles etc.

Had this happen on my previous A4 Allroad about 2 years ago,

only it was the o/s/r. I know at least another 2 people who have

had to change the o/s/r mount due to it breaking up. so it pays

to keep an eye on them.

Thanks Brian - I agree.

These parts don’t seem very robust.

Just had my 2020 A6 in at the Audi dealer for a service and MOT . They failed the MOT on both rear spring lower spring seats being corroded and perished . They quoted just over £500 to get them replaced . Took it to my local garage and they charged £240. Common problem and not the best design , especially as the metal piece holds the spring seats in place and when they corrode they can become unstable .

I had exactly the same issue with my 2019 A6 Avant 40 TDI Sport last year, failed MOT at 39K miles and a similar cost @ £250 per side. Thankfully i had got a deal earlier in the year for the  "all in service and warranty" with Audi and they replaced FOC.

I bet that pained the branch manager.

I bought 2 of these genuine Audi one's. Amazon £27.48 each  (Audi Stamped )

That upsets me as I have the service plan with the Audi warranty and they said that they wouldn’t replace them on the warranty because they were corroded . I bet the Audi dealer didn’t even bother asking the warranty company, just tried getting £500 out of me as it’s easier.

Yes the parts are cheap but the main  dealer charges £150 an hour , I took it to my local garage and he charged me £50 an hour . I’m not paying a £100 an hour extra to sit in a fancy showroom with a free coffee machine .

I bet the local lads would have offered you a free brew, I also bet they do a better job and wont be mincing about in immaculate boiler suits, fair play mate on supporting your local indy.

Spot on , once service plan and warranty runs out I will be using the local German car Specialist, tend to know more than the Audi ‘Technicians’  anyway

I have  the all in warranty too  but Derby Audi refused saying it was wear and tear.

Thats why ended up i changed them myself wasn't going to let the stealer have anymore of my cash then have to wait all day for the car.

Changing my disc's and pads at the weekend as £1050 is a joke for them to change them,
